As the world’s urban population continues to grow, with an anticipated increase as high as 63% between 2014 and 2050 (UN outlook), there is more of a need for sustainable development than ever before. Cities are becoming smarter as businesses and governments are working together toward a common goal of introducing sustainable policies and creating new solutions to improve residents’ quality of life and reduce environmental footprint.
Waste management is one the critical components in achieving sustainability in cities. Moscow recently adopted its first Smart City strategy, where sustainable development is one of the six key components, and automated waste management is one of the contributing solutions, on par with environmentally friendly transportation and localized environmental monitoring.
New waste management systems are emerging around the world using IoT or Internet of Things technology. IoT refers to inter-networking of physical objects through integrated electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. Multiple Sistema companies are already seeing results from integrating IoT into their businesses.
Mikron, a Sistema company working in the hi-tech segment, has just unveiled an IoT-based solution for efficient waste management.
The wireless device presented by Mikron allows for remote monitoring of garbage amounts deposited to bins and optimization of waste collection logistics. The device, installed directly inside the bins, consists of a fill-level tracker, data transmission module and security controller.
Data on the fill-level of the bin is transmitted to the monitoring system via the NB-IoT network at adjustable time intervals. Based on statistical data, the system calculates approximate filling dates, determines the optimal number and location of bins. The technology helps optimize waste collection logistics, thereby reducing fuel emissions.
Mikron is piloting the solution jointly with X5 Retail Group at 50 of the company’s Perekrestok retail store locations. Once the device-equipped bins at these locations are 2/3 full, a notification is sent to the store’s administration and regional operator responsible for waste collection at that location. The solution provides for control over timely emptying of the bins and uninterrupted cleanliness of the area adjacent to the store.

This partnership is of particular importance to us as it allows to switch over to Russian-made components and software, eliminating the dependency on foreign suppliers to deliver and service the system.”
